Relics fo the Nile is pleased to present this rare and interesting large carved wood shabti for a scribe. The shabti is carved from sycamore wood and is presented mammiform with a tripartite wig with arms crossed over the chest. A seed sack is painted on the back. The figure is heavily coated in a shiny black resin on the back and the details of the seed sack are presented in yellow. The cosmetic details, head cloth and agricultural implements are depicted in black pigment and the skin of the figure is presented in red, indicating that this shabti was for a male. The figure has nice facial features with some black cosmetic details remaining and a well-carved osiris beard. While the pigment has been lost throughout the piece there are still traces of the broad collar and vertical column that originally likely contained hieroglyphics showing the name of the owner. This knife was created from one large piece of flint; using localized pressure (as opposed to striking the blade with a hammerstone), a craftsman precisely removed small flakes of flint to produce the ripple-flake on both sides and serrated cutting edge. The facial features on the mask are expertly rendered with a detailed nose with nostrils and a serene expression carved on the lips. This is a rare example that would have been incorporated into the cartonnage wrappings of the mummy.
