Pre-Dynastic Wavy-Handled Vessel, Naqada II ca 3500-3300BC Tall, shouldered jar with a small, flat base; two long, thin wavy handles project outward from the sides of the vessel and a thin, rounded rim caps a shallow neck. Through the study of wavy-handled jars such as this one, archaeologists were able to piece together the sequence dating system that forms the basis for much of our knowledge of the Pre-dynastic period. This artifact comes from the Naqada I culture, which places the bowl at the beginning of the fourth millennium B.C. This is also known as Amratian, and ran parallel to the Badarian culture. A fine, bulbous-bodied, natural tan color, pottery vessel having wide perforated lug handles and wide, flat collar rim. Overall multi-spiral painted decoration with zigzag linear connecting elements. A 3" area of restoration to the edge of the rim and some of the spiral decorative elements have been refreshed, a minor area of loss to the edge of the rim above the lug handle, interior with light erosion, otherwise intact. A rare and beautiful example.

The scarab held special significance for the Egyptians as a representation of the the creator and solar deity, Khepri. The scarab beetle rolls its eggs in a ball of dung along the ground, which the Egyptians held as symbolic of Khepri pushing the sun across the sky.
