Gandharan Schist Frieze of the Death of Buddha, ca. 2nd - 3rd Century CE. Expressive relief with Buddha surrounded by grieving Acolytes and monks. At 80 years old The Buddha ate tainted food and became very sick when he lay down between two trees to die. His death released his from the endless cycle of Life and he attained Nirvana (the extinction of Desire.) Ex: Michael Longazel collection. 8 1/4" high and in very good condition.

Gandharan Schist Head of the Emaciated Siddhartha, ca. 2nd - 3rd Century CE. Siddhartha renounced his princely existance in search of truth. For six years he tried to find his salvation by practicing asceticism. He came to look like a living skeleton with deeply sunken eyeballs, projecting cheekbones, tight lips with a gentle smile attests his superhuman efforts to exceed human limitations.
