This nice hoard lot of silver dirhems dates to the rule of the early Mameluke sultanate of Egypt. In 1252, the sultan of Egypt was deposed by his bodyguards, who belonged to a class of Turkish slaves who had been brought to Egypt to serve as soldiers for the Ayyubid caliph. The soldier Aybak was placed on the throne after the coup, which began the line of Mameluke puppet caliphs known as the Abbasids.
