Here’s another extraordinary Aztec pipe (AXH92) from the estate of the late Dr. Allen Heflin. Collected at the site of Cuautitlan, Mexico in 1961 (and characteristically marked by Heflin with that information in black ink on the base of its highly burnished redware stem), the bichrome pipe has been glued in two places and shows signs of ancient tip wear from the tightly clenched teeth of the Aztec warrior who smoked it. The world-renowned Dr. Allen Heflin collection contained one of the largest assortments of Pre-Columbian ceramic pipes seen on the market in recent years. He found this one (AXH89) at the Aztec site of Cuautitlan, Mexico in July 1960 (so-marked on the bottom of the stem in black ink). Measuring 3 ¼” in length, this gracefully shaped, polished, dark greenstone chisel (TEH160) comes without specfic provenance but is believed to be Pre-Columbian in age and was probably found in Mexico by the late Chester Howard. In excellent condition with only a couple of tiny dings on its sharpened bit edge and the corner of its poll, it was most likely used for woodworking and dates somewhere in the period c.300BC-1500AD.
