Bes was a god imported into Egyptian mythology from Nubia in the Middle Kingdom. His name is associated with African words for cat. Worship of the deity Bes was exported overseas, and he was popular with the Phoenicians.
Depicted as a gnarly dwarf guarding against evil spirits and misfortune in general, he was considered protector of the pharaohs, as well as god of children, pleasure, music and dancing. Bes was a household deity, who’s duty was to protect homes, kill snakes, fight off evil spirits, watch and protect children, project fertility and aid women during labor.
