| This 7/16” wide ancient intaglio seal (100.40LHD), made from dark green chalcedony that has the appearance of bloodstone without the red blebs, was found in western Afghanistan during the Russian occupation. Dated to the Sassanian period, c.300-600AD, the seal may possibly date somewhat earlier into the Parthian era. In overall very good condition with light surface pitting and some minor edge roughness that does not affect the engraved image of an elk or stag, the seal may have been worn and used as a sign of the wearer’s speed, agility and power, or could have worn for no other reason that it was an appealing bit of art. It comes with a small display card and a map of Afghanistan highlighting the general area in which the seal was found. | ||
