A lovely Byzantine mold made terracotta oil lamp discovered in Syria-Palestine and dated ca. 500 - 650 AD, the Early Byzantine Period. The lamp measures 10.3 cm and is covered with a heavy earth encrustation. The clay is a rich orange color and shipping is free. A raised ring encircles the filler-hole and a larger raised ring grows from around the wick-hole to enclose the filler-hole. The tongue handle has four vertical lines on the front and back with a concentric circle on the top. The raised ring base also has a concentric circle in the center and the lamp is in excellent condition. Terracotta articles were used extensively throughout the ancient world and plates, jugs and pitchers were in daily use. The most common item, however, was the oil lamp. These small lamps were the only source of heat and illumination in every home and shop and were also frequently utilized as funerary objects. Our Certificate of Authenticity with guarantee is included and worldwide shipping is always free. U.S. payments may be a personal check or money order made payable to: Passage to Antiquity P.O.
