A large and spectacular Byzantine stone (limestone?) bread stamp measuring 5.4 cm in height, 4.9 cm wide and 1.8 cm thick. The seal is dated ca. 5th century AD, and the mount for suspension on the reverse is broken from the seal. We believe this was done while the drill-hole was being made. The seal is in excellent condition and shipping is free. Bread stamps were used in the Roman Empire to authenticate the baker of the bread. In the Byzantine Empire, with their strong emphasis on Christianity, the stamps would identify the baker but more usually they were used for marking breads for the Eucharist. The stamps could be made of stone, pottery, bronze or wood and were also called Prosphora Stamps intended to mark bread for consecration and communion. Our Certificate of Authenticity with guarantee is included and worldwide shipping is always free. U.S. payments may be a personal check or money order made payable to: Passage to Antiquity P.O. Box 3433 Munster, IN 46321 If you prefer PayPal, kindly remit to: Passtoant@hughes.net |
