A LOT OF 5 BYZANTINE BRONZE CUP COINS - SCYLPHATES
A beautiful lot of five Byzantine cup coins excavated in one of the Balkan States and dated ca. 1050 AD, the reign of Constantine IX, in the Byzantine Empire. The coins are in exceptionally good condition with the stampings clearly visible.

These somewhat odd coins were called scylphates and were produced during the years 1042 - 1055 AD. Usually, both sides of the coins were stamped with a figure of Christ, the Virgin or one or two saints. Because of the few years of production and the unusual shape these coins have become sought after collector's items.
