HOLY LAND OIL LAMP - EARLY CHRISTIAN PERIOD
A splendid terracotta oil lamp excavated near Jerusalem and dated 1st - 4th century AD, the Early Christian Period. The lamp measures 6.81 cm and the clay is a light orange color. There is a slightly chipped raised ring around the filler-hole and the bottom has a maker's mark in the form of a diamond and two chevrons. Shipping is free and the lamp is in excellent condition.

Terracotta items were used extensively throughout the ancient world and pitchers, plates, bowls and jugs were in daily use. However, the most common items were the oil lamps. Aside from being essential household items these small lamps were the only source of illumination and heat in every home and shop and were also frequently utilized as funerary objects.
