Rare and lovely original lead plaque relief probably from Pannonia (an ancient province of the Roman Empire bounded north and east by the Danube, coterminous westward with Noricum and upper Italy, and southward with Dalmatia and upper Moesia. Pannonia was located over the territory of the present-day western half of Hungary). Beautifully decorated "Twin arched temple façade type" with Sol Invictus on quadriga driving his horses toward the front, in the middle Helen surrounded by the Dioscuri (i.e. Castor and Pollux). Both the Dioscuri are represented as the "Danubian horseman." Roman/Danubian subjects below attending to daily chores, small rooster in lower right field, two snakes (representing immortality) at center base - one now almost completely obscured. Ca. 2nd to 3rd century AD. 9.3 x 7.8 cm, excellent condition with clear subject matter, missing lower left corner.
