Medieval Fatimid Period Coptic Textile Fragment, Egypt
This large, complicated, and multicolored fragment belongs to a class of later Coptic textiles from the Fatimid period of Egypt known as Fayum textiles. These textiles are visually busy with plant motifs, like vine scrolls and complex palmettes, along with stylized animals, like birds, and sometimes Arabic script. This class of textile can be dated fairly conclusively to ca. 1000 A.D. based on parallel inscribed examples from state-sponsored textile workshops. Ironically, Fayum textiles are less common than earlier Coptic examples; this is a nice example of a rare type. See Thompson, "Coptic Textiles in the Brooklyn Museum," #38, for a very similar, larger example.

AGE: Late 10th to early 11th century A.D.

CONDITION: Fragmentary from a larger garment as shown, but in good shape. This is a deeper, finer weave than earlier Coptic textiles, and it has held together better than usual. This piece comes ready to display in the 12" x 8" Riker case shown in the photos.

DIMENSIONS: About 8" tall and 7" wide (20.3 cm x 17.8 cm)
