Thutmose (or Thutmosis) III was one of Egypt's most celebrated pharaohs. He ruled during the 18th Dynasty from 1504-1450 B.C., early in the New Kingdom period. Egypt had previously been an insular, xenophobic society, but the intrusion of the Hyksos peoples into the Nile delta during the 2nd Intermediate Period brought updated technology and awareness of the wealth that was available in the outside world. Accordingly, the early New Kingdom pharaohs focused on driving out the Hyksos and conquering potential threats. Thutmosis III was the most successful in this regard as he made extensive conquests in Syria, Nubia, and Libya that brought extensive wealth into Egypt. This prosperity allowed Thutmosis to authorize extensive building projects throughout Egypt. Subsequent generations living in less prosperous times came to view Thutmosis III as the ideal model of a pharaoh, and commemorative reissues of his scarabs, such as this one, were popular in later dynasties.
This scarab bears the throne name of Thutmosis III, Men-kheper-re (Lasting is the Manifestation of Re), along with the titles "The Good God, Lord of the Two Lands" and the devotion "Beloved of Amon-Re." AGE: 18th Dynasty, 1479-1425 B.C. CONDITION: In excellent shape with a crisp, uncompromised inscription. One leg has a very small chip, else perfect. DIMENSIONS: 0.56 inches long (1.43 cm) |
