| Roman Period, 2nd 3rd Century AD. An interesting sandstone head of the god Bes. Nicely styled with glaring features and characteristic maneč and large, staring eyes. Small head-dress composed of a stylized solar disc and plumes. The back of the head is rough, where it was part of a wall or larger sculpture group. H: 30.4cm / 12". On a custom base. A most fascinating rendition of this popular Egyptian protector-god. The god Bes originally had a very leonine appearance during the height of his popularity in the late Dynastic periods. By Roman times the god had taken more of a human appearance, but retained the maneč and large, bulging eyes. A nice Romanizedč image of this god seen as a protector of childbirth and children. | ||
