DECISION DYNAMICS OF BUYING

WHEN VIEWING OUR CATALOG MAKE SURE TO ENJOY THE ARCHIVED ITEMS.

Have you ever bought a collectible item only to discover that the collectible cannot be sold for more than half of the amount for which it was purchased? Do you find that once you have purchased the collectible, the gallery/dealer from whom you acquired the collectible seemingly avoids you and does not want anything to do with you or the item? If so, you are not alone. Who you purchase an item from, as well as what item is purchased, are of equal importance not only during acquisition but in the future when it is time to sell.

The way we do business is different. Over the years, we have handled many great pieces, quite a few of which we have owned multiple times. Why? When selling a great piece, we ask that we have a gentleman’s agreement with the understanding that after a few years, should the item be sold, we have the first right-of-refusal to purchase the piece back. Why? That, too, is simple. The great pieces are always in high demand and we know what items we have sold as well as knowing where those buyers are who are building new collections and who also really want the best. Remember, “THE BEST ONLY GET BETTER WITH TIME.”

The question becomes, “so what do I buy and how do I do it”? We believe that when purchasing a collectible with or without restoration is a personal preference and should be done with a full and clear understanding of its impact. In the collectibles and art markets, restoration (with ceramics the addition of plaster or paint) generally reduces not only the value, but the liquidity of an item. In the world of Native American ceramics restoration (the addition of plaster and/or paint) significantly reduces not only the value but even more so the liquidity of the object. The only exception(s) to this rule consist of items with extraordinary beauty (which are in a “class by themselves”); or it is the only way that specific type of piece may be available. Items that have good form; good artwork; and being intact and without restoration, command prices which can be several multiples of a similar restored item. These “superior” pieces are constantly in demand by both dealers and collectors alike. In addition, these pieces are little effected by the economy and actually fair extremely well, even rising in an economic downturn.

To our customers who wish to protect their investment or intend to sell their collection in the future, we recommend they purchase the very best items they can which meet the criteria as described above. If they choose to purchase pieces with restoration, we strongly suggest they limit the amount of restoration to no more than 3-4% only when the piece is rare, of exceptional art form, or the only known item of its kind to exist broken or in limited restored condition.

Virtually every collection, at some time, is sold and it is the quality of the pieces that dictates which ones are readily sellable and yield a nice return on the "collecting investment."
